“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Poems of the Month

Poem for Easter

Nothing

Nothing found against Him in the trials

Nothing to condemn Him could be found

Spotless was the One who stood before them

Still they could not see the Holy ground

Hidden was His beauty by their anger

Hidden all His worth by hatred’s breath

Murderous hearts had blinded all their reason

Driving them to cry out for His death.

Nothing found against Him before Pilate

Still he had Him scourged and crowned with thorns

Mocked and hit and spat upon and beaten

Terrible the punishment He bore

Silently He as a Lamb in shearing

Gave Himself to suffering and shame

Nothing moved His voice to cry injustice

Innocent He carried all our blame

Nothing could be written to condemn Him

For He truly was the King of Jews

Nothing could take life unyielded from Him

If the cross of death He did not choose

But the LORD on Him His Son Beloved

All the guilt of all men fully laid

Every sin handwritten nailed upon Him

And by precious blood all debts were paid

Nothing that the prophets had fore-spoken

Unfulfilled upon dark Calvary’s hill

Nothing that the Lamb left unaccomplished

In surrender to His Father’s will

Satan, sin and death and hell defeated

Openly displayed for all to see

Open for the eye of faith to ponder

God’s great love to save humanity

Nothing had He now for all was taken

Garments shared and took as lots were tossed

Though through Him all things were made and fashioned

Marred above all men upon the cross

Everything He gave for our redemption

Everything He gave our souls to save

Nothing had he left for all was given

Lifeless laid within a borrowed grave

Ah the thought that He had come to nothing

Cheered the hearts of those who wished Him die

Others torn with pain to lose their Master

Hid themselves in fear to grieve and cry

Nothing of their hopes now left without Him

Nothing left their cheerless hearts to save

All their hopes in Christ had come to nothing

He lay dead and cold within a grave

Nothing though could hold the sinless Saviour

Rock nor seal nor strength of any man

Nothing hold the spotless Son of Glory

Nothing hinder God’s eternal plan

Rising from the grave as He had promised

Empty grave clothes left where He’d been laid

Nothing to condemn us now forever

Nothing that we owed was left unpaid

Nothing now can ever separate us

Nothing snatch us from the hand of God

Life nor death nor power nor any creature

From His love in Jesus Christ our Lord

Nothing stop our Glorious King returning

To receive the bride for whom He died

Nothing end the praise of endless ages

Father, Son and Spirit magnified

Nothing can compare to such a Treasure

Nothing to the Pearl of greatest price

Nothing to the love of God our Father

Yielding up His Son to give us life

Nothing to be done but to believe Him

Nothing leave behind but deadly sin

Nothing that can save us at the judgement

Nothing if we will not trust in Him

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭38‬-‭39‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

The tomb is sealed and guarded

The tomb is sealed and guarded

And Jesus lies within

Wrapped up in strips of linen

His body dead and still

Despised, rejected, hated,

By those who were His own

And killed by crucifixion

Conspired by them alone

By wicked hands He suffered

In agony and pain

Cut off from all the living

And evil ruled again

Though no deceit was in Him

He died beside a thief

And in a tomb they laid Him

With sorrow, tears and grief

He in the end had perished

Like every son of man

And in the tomb they held Him

Destroyed as they had planned

All expectations ended

For all who loved His Name

Death dashed their hopes to pieces

Their Christ would never reign

Oh think upon that Friday

What was achieved that day?

Was it to be for nothing

The Saviour died that way?

No! There God’s Son in mercy

Himself our sins did bear

And every accusation

Was pinned upon Him there.

Our secret sins and open

Condemned for all to see

There God displayed His justice

On that accursed tree

That none could then accuse Him

When letting sinners live

That death had not been suffered

That He might not forgive

Oh look my soul in sorrow

Your sin has brought Him there

But look! For now tomorrow

Is yours without despair

For all your debt on Calvary

By Him was fully paid

There punishment was finished

He rests now in the grave

I do believe My Saviour

You died upon that tree

For all my life’s transgressions

To justly set me free

A justice paid by mercy

By God’s amazing grace

By love immense, unfathomed

Christ dying in my place.

Poems for Christmas

Certain

That which we believe is certain

Quite unlike the words of men

God’s own Son came down from heaven

And was born in Bethlehem

Certainly His name is Jesus

Sent to save us from our sin

Certainly no one will perish

None who put their trust in Him

God’s own word cannot be broken

He Who spoke it cannot lie

Unto us is born a Saviour

Born to take our place and die

Born to take our sins upon Him

Born to take them far away

Born to give us life forever

Born to turn our night to day

Do you doubt that in a virgin

God could place His precious Son?

Is the God of heaven’s power

Limited by anyone?

Blessed was she who then believed Him

And she saw His word fulfilled

There His Son lay in a manger

As the God of heaven willed

Son of God yet Son of Mary

Son of God yet Son of Man

Christ our human flesh partaking

God’s eternal master plan

His own Son to dwell among us

God with us Emmanuel

Bear our sin Himself to save us

Bring us back to God again

Mary birthed and held and fed Him

Pondering the things she heard

Angels, shepherds, wise men, prophets

Spoke of Him the Living Word

And the words they all had spoken

Were fulfilled before her eyes

Even though her heart was pierced

As her Son was crucified

Yet she saw Him rise victorious

He who God formed in her womb

Saw the One she named as Jesus

Conquer sin and death and tomb

Saw Him rise with scars in triumph

Wounds of nail and spear and thorn

Worshipped Him as her Messiah,

Certain of the One she’d borne

Hear apostles, gospel writers

Tax collectors, fishermen

Witness to their risen Saviour

After He had died for them

Suffering persecution, trials

Still proclaiming His great love

Certain that He cares and watches

From His Father’s throne above

O be certain He descended

To be born in Bethlehem

Certain that His name is Jesus

Saviour of the world of men

Certain that for us He suffered

Certain that for us He died

Certain that our sins are dealt with

By this Saviour crucified

Certain that His body broken

And His blood shed on the tree

Fully cleanses us forever

Fully sets the prisoner free

Certain that His lifeless body

Lay within an earthly grave

Certain that He rose triumphant

Certain that He lives to save

Certain that He sits in glory

Seated at His Father’s side

Certain that He’s soon returning

To receive His purchased bride

Certain that all eyes shall see Him

When He comes to judge all men

Every word of God is certain

Christ is coming back again

That which we believe is certain

Quite unlike the words of men

God’s own Son came down from heaven

And was born in Bethlehem

Certainly His name is Jesus

Sent to save us from our sin

Certainly no one will perish

None who put their trust in Him

“Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order

a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us,

just as those who from the beginning

were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word

delivered them to us,

it seemed good to me also,

having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first,

to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,

that you may know the certainty

of those things in which you were instructed.”

God was manifested in the flesh!

Great is indeed the mystery

God’s Son from all eternity

His glory should divest

That Jesus Christ we may confess

Has taken of our very flesh

And here was manifest

And though rejected, mocked and killed

His Righteous Father’s will fulfilled

To glorify His Name

Then by the Spirit’s power raised

To conquer sin and death and grave

And Justify His claim

He lower than the angels made

The great Creator here displayed

Before their very sight

Through manger, garden, cross and grave

They see the Prince of heaven save

His sheep from darkest night

And Gentiles hear His gospel still

Until their fullness has come in

That yet He may be found

The mystery of God revealed

That every nation may be healed

And in His grace abound

Here on the earth He is received

Throughout the world His truth believed

By hearts and tongues confessed

The eye of faith the unseen sees

That each believing heart will be,

As He has promised, blessed

Received to glorious majesty

Where He had dwelt eternally

The Lamb whom men had slain

Remembered now by broken bread

And wine to show the blood He shed

Until He comes again

Great is indeed the mystery

That God the Son, for you and me,

His glory should divest

That Jesus Christ we may confess

Has taken of our very flesh

And here was manifest

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifested in the flesh,

Justified in the Spirit,

Seen by angels,

Preached among the Gentiles,

Believed on in the world,

Received up in glory.”

Other poems

Jesus lifts me from the waves

When I fix my eyes on Jesus

There I see My Father's love

Lifting me above the waters

That would drown my soul in doubt

There I find myself enabled

Through the power of His grace

To believe my sins forgiven

That I might My God embrace

There sin does not have dominion

There I triumph o'er the grave

Impossibilities are silenced

Jesus lifts me from the waves

There are those who have nothing

There are those who have nothing

Whose homes are demolished

Their every possession been taken away

Who cry in the darkness

Who weep in the morning

Who at the day's dawning are hungry once more

There are those who have nothing

Who cry out for pity

Who run from a city where terror now reigns

Who look for a shelter

To lie down in safety

From those with no mercy whose power brings war

There are those who have nothing

Who look for compassion

For hands that will reach out to comfort their pain

Who test where our hearts lie

Who see if we walk by

Who know if they're those that we simply ignore

that I breathe?”

A collection of Easter poems

Frank Westall has recorded videos of a trilogy of poems he has written recounting the Easter story, following Jesus’ death and resurrection.

All three poems feature in Frank’s debut book ‘Whatever touches your heart touches mine.’

Below is a video of the final poem in the series - ‘Easter Morning,’ but you can watch all three videos on Frank’s video page.

Easter Morning

‘but the bluebells reigns supremely, catching every beam of light, as the birdsong fills the heavens and your senses reignite.’
